Western Culture, Fundamentalism and Secularisation

Course aim

To enable students to examine the implications of theories applied to International Relations, in respect and tolerance between cultures.

Course content

Using a sociology knowledge approach, students will systematically analyse and evaluate complex theories of modern western culture, including the privileging of certain conceptions of science and history and their influence on both fundamentalism and secularisation. Students will also make a comparison of religious and secular epistemologies in order to explore theories about the differences in world view between East and West and their implications for international relations and understanding other cultures.

Students will also examines theories about the development of dominant western approaches to science and history, the increasing implausibility of religious belief, the death of God in Hegel, Marx, Nietzsche, and the rise of fundamentalism in the West.
