Sustainable Development

Course aim

To provide students with historical and theoretical insights into the debates on development and a thorough understanding of the increasing interplay of economics, politics, environment and culture in contemporary capitalism.

Course content

Contemporary capitalism and issues related to production of wealth, appropriation of nature and accumulation of capital; debates in regards to capitalism’s ability to respond effectively to ecological threats to its survival, limits to that ability and the class biases of responses; dialectical relationship between ecology and economic progress and its implications for sustainable development; feminist critique of contemporary notion of human capabilities and female human beings; the changing notion of sustainable development, culture and the proposition of development as freedom; scopes and limits of “global partnership” and international assistance to governance reforms and human development in the developing world.
