Reading and Readers' Advisory

Course aim

To familiarise students with the major issues in the provision of readers’ advisory and reading in school and public libraries for children, young adults, and adults.

Course content

Fiction and nonfiction for adults, adolescents, and children in various formats (CDs, DVDs, e-books, print, film, pop culture, etc.); understanding the reader; how different materials reflect the society that produces them; social debates over what people should or should not read, and what is good literature; low versus high culture debates; readers’ advisory for adults, children, and young adults; materials selection, annotations and reviews; programming for public and school libraries (i.e. book clubs, author talks, etc.), resource based learning; the librarian's professional responsibilities in regard to the provision of leisure reading materials; development of literacy and digital literacy.
