Course overview

Upskill rapidly with a Professional Certificate specifically designed for Defence and related industry personnel. Delivered fully online, this Professional Certificate can be taken as a stand-alone course, as a building block as part of the UniSA Defence Professional Certificates or may also be used as credit for the Master of Systems Engineering.

The Professional Certificate in Test and Evaluation offers a comprehensive foundation in the principles, methodologies, and practices of Test and Evaluation (T&E) in systems engineering. Participants will explore the critical role that testing and evaluation play in ensuring system performance, reliability, and compliance with requirements across various domains, including defense, aerospace, and manufacturing. The course covers the entire T&E process, from planning and test design to execution and reporting, with a focus on ensuring that systems meet their intended operational capabilities and are validated in real-world conditions. Through a combination of lectures, case studies, and practical exercises, students will gain hands-on experience in applying T&E principles to real-world projects, ensuring systems meet quality, safety, and performance standards. By the end of this course, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and tools to plan, conduct, and analyse effective tests, enabling them to make informed decisions about system readiness and performance.

Course content

  • Relationship between T&E and other disciplines;
  • T&E in the Systems Engineering Life-Cycle;
  • The scientific method;
  • Articulating “solution-independent” measures of effectiveness, suitability and performance;
  • Fundamentals of developmental, acceptance and operational test and evaluation;
  • Environmental conditions and threat assessments;
  • Team-based T&E strategies and master plans;
  • Introduction to the legal aspects of T&E and international treaties and agreements;
  • T&E resources – test ranges and facilities and the application of modelling and simulation;
  • Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) to support T&E; and
  • Planning, conducting, executing and reporting test results

Course Structure

This Professional Certificate has two short courses within it. This allows the flexibility to undertake the Professional Certificate in two ways.

  • Content only which includes directed study over a short period. You will receive a Certificate of Completion for the audit only course.
  • Content and Assessment which includes directed study over a short period plus additional activities and assessment. You will receive a Professional Certificate on completion.

Successful completion of both the Content and Assessment courses within the professional certificate can be used as credit into the Master of Systems Engineering against the equivalent course.

Course Schedules

  • 7 weeks of content delivery
  • 7 weeks of optional assessment.
  • Weekly online live tutorials scheduled at convenient time for all attendees (usually after 5 pm)
  • Recorded lectures and interactive online learning resources.
  • Assessment include essay, individual assignment and a group assignment.

Entry Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of Systems Engineering processes.
