    Admission criteria

    The admission criteria have been grouped to assist you to easily find the information most relevant to your circumstances. However, you may fit into more than one and the university will consider applicants against each of the relevant criteria.

    Certain conditions apply. For more information refer to Appendix 4 of the University's Selection and Entry policy.

    To be eligible for selection, applicants are required to have:

      Completed the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE); and

    • completed 200 credits of subjects;
    • achieved a grade of C* or better in the Personal Learning Plan, 20 credits of literacy, 10 credits of numeracy and the Research Project at Stage 2;
    • achieved a grade C- or better in an additional 60 credits at Stage 2;
    • obtained a competitive ATAR.

      * For Stage 2 subjects a grade of C- or better is required

    • Completed the equivalent secondary education qualifications as required for University entry under SACE and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
    • Completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma, obtaining a minimum score of 24 points and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
    • Completed or partly completed a recognised higher education program at a recognised higher education institution and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
    • Completed at least four Open Universities Australia (OUA) courses at the appropriate level and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
    • Completed an award from TAFE or from another registered training organisation at AQF Certificate IV or above and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
    • Qualified for Special Entry and fulfilled any prerequisite requirements;
    • Completed the University Foundation Studies program
    * Normally applicants with a grade point average of 4** or better will be recognised for entry.
    ** A GPA of 4 refers to the UniSA grading scale which has a range of 1 - 7, other Australian and international grading scales will be considered.

    English language entry requirements

    In addition, international students who speak English as a foreign language must have obtained one of the following standards within the last two years prior to admission. Possession of one or more of these qualifications, in addition to the academic entry requirements, does not, in itself, guarantee a place at the University of South Australia. Applications are considered on an individual basis and selection is competitive. Where previous study/work experience was conducted in English, the application must be accompanied by certified documentation from the educational institution/employer certifying that the language of instruction/employment was English.

Aim

To provide graduates with the education and skills necessary to be accountants in public practice, commerce and industry, and the public sector. It also provides a sound qualification for careers in business and management.

Content & Structure

The program comprises an eight course Division Core (see Note 1), an eight course Accounting major, nine elective courses and of these, eight elective courses may be used to take either a second eight course major in another discipline, or one or two four course minors in other disciplines (including the Professional Accounting Minor). If only one minor is taken, the other four electives may be chosen from a broad range of courses. See Notes 5 and 6 concerning electives. The program requires the completion of 24 courses totalling 108 units, as listed in the program schedule.

    Rules

    1. The program comprises: a Division Core of eight courses; a major sequence of eight courses specific to the program (this includes one Division Core course); and nine elective courses.

    Notes

    1. The Division Core comprises eight courses which are common to all the undergraduate programs in the Division of Business. These courses are offered in both the first and second half of the year.

    2. Students seeking to satisfy the educational requirements for entry to Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand's (ICAA) professional program (the Chartered Accountants Program) must complete the Professional Minor of Companies and Partnership Law, Taxation Law 1 and Auditing Theory and Practice.

    3. Students who wish to satisfy the educational requirements for admission to the professional program of CPA Australia (to qualify as a CPA) must complete COML 2005 Companies and Partnership Law (taken in study period 5 of second year).

    4. One elective course may be chosen from any course offered at the University. All other elective courses should be selected from those offered by the schools in the Division of Business. However, with the approval of the Program Director, students may choose appropriate courses from outside the Division.

    5. Accounting electives are courses offered by the accounting discipline in the School of Commerce. Refer to the electives listing below. All of these courses may not be offered every year. In choosing electives and courses generally, students should ensure that they satisy any requirements.

    6. Contemporary Issues in Accounting has replaced Issues in Accounting Theory. If you have satisfactorily completed Issues in Accounting Theory, do not enrol in this course.

Professional accreditation and recognition

This program is recognised for maximum exemptions toward the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants' (ACCA) professional programs of study.
