To develop students’ understanding of contemporary practices in mathematics teaching and to prepare them to plan, resource, teach and evaluate well sequenced mathematics learning experiences and topics as part of a longer-term program.
This course will examine the importance of developing preservice teachers’ positive dispositions towards mathematics and how to develop students’ skills in working and thinking mathematically. Preservice teachers will examine current research in mathematics education and how it can be applied to inform their planning and practice. Preservice teachers will analyse the development of key concepts in primary mathematics and identify critical progression points for children’s learning. They will also identify possible misconceptions held by students and explore ways to address these. Throughout the course, preservice teachers will explore important pedagogical issues, including anticipating student’s responses, using multiple representations and differentiated learning. This course focuses on planning teaching and learning experiences of mathematics at a unit level that are informed by the Australian Curriculum, taking into consideration a range of educational issues.
