Science for Tertiary Learning

Course aim

The aim of the course is to introduce students from a non-science background to the basic concepts of science and the scientific method and the application of creative problem-solving approaches. The course focusses on the physical sciences areas of physics and chemistry.

Course content

Using problem solving approaches this course balances practical and theoretical knowledge to enhance students' understanding of scientific enquiry. It introduces the basic concepts of life and physical sciences. It explores the origins and history of science, the scientific method, physical quantities and phenomena, the periodic table of the elements, atoms, investigating matter, chemical reactions, and the solar system. It also introduces Newton’s Laws of motion, momentum and energy, gravity and projectile motion, electricity and magnetism, heat, and waves (sound and light). The course covers presentation of data, manipulation of equations, and use of digital technologies. Laboratory classes begin to develop students’ practical knowledge, skills and techniques, and safe practices in a laboratory setting.
