Future Ideas: Information Literacy and the Internet

Course aim

To develop effective information retrieval and evaluation skills in order to build academic reading, writing, problem solving, critical analysis, and research skills for future university study, emerging technology use, and professional employment.

Course content

Students will examine information and communication technology and explore how to use this effectively to find quality sources for undergraduate study and to manage their digital identity. Students will investigate changing information use and emerging trends, including artificial intelligence, big data, and memes. Students will develop research techniques which focus on the identification, use, and evaluation of information sources relevant to university study. Students will use information to address real world challenges in order to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills in an applied context. Students will generate understanding of issues related to privacy, ethics, and liability of information use. Students will develop idea generation and innovation strategies for professional and ethical practice at undergraduate level and in future careers. Students will examine new forms of technology, internet culture, digital media, networking and communication to better understand the challenges and opportunities in applying these to everyday situations and tertiary study.
