Course aim

Students in this course will study the essential knowledge and skills necessary to: (1) understand the statutory rights and remedies offered by the Australian Consumer Law, (2) analyse causes of action under the Australian Consumer Law, (3) evaluate breaches of General Protections and Specific Protections of the ACL.

Course content

  • Documenting the historical evolution of Consumer Law from Caveat Emptor to Regulation
  • Examining the General Protections in Chapter 2 of the ACL
  • Developing an understanding of the Specific Protections of the ACL
  • Learning about Consumer Guarantee
  • Detailing Chapter 4 of the ACL – Offences
  • Actioning the Enforcement and Remedies provisions under Chapter 5 of the ACL
  • Reviewing the role of the ACCC in Consumer Law
  • Contrasting the powers of the ACCC with the State Consumer regulatory bodies
  • Delving into the Financial Services Regulations affecting Consumers
