To develop early childhood preservice teachers’ conceptual knowledge about how young children, birth to five years of age, explore mathematics and science in their environment. To equip early childhood preservice teachers with the professional skills required to identify, plan for and evaluate individual children’s conceptual understandings of mathematics and science, utilising responsive pedagogies.
Preservice teachers will examine children’s (birth to five years of age) intuitive construction of mathematical and scientific understanding, processes, and attitudes in an integrated way. They will strengthen their pedagogical content knowledge including collecting and interpreting formative assessment data, to plan learning experiences that cater for diverse learners, using The Early Years Learning Framework, Preschool Numeracy Indicators and The Australian Curriculum Mathematics proficiencies and mathematical content strands. Preservice teachers will apply pedagogical and critical reflection strategies, with an emphasis on play-based approaches and intentional teaching, to develop directions for further learning.
