Course aim

To understand the theory and practice of operating systems and tool chains for software development.

Course content

Computer hardware overview and system architecture; microprocessors and assembly language; operating system fundamentals, process protection, and inter-process communication; scheduling algorithms; current OS comparison SMP systems; virtual memory, swap space, and paging algorithms; rotating disk media, physical and logica access, RAID, and journaling; OS and network systems programming, and open source software; criteria for tool evaluation and selection; and using software development tools such as Bugtrack, Version Control/CVS, Collaboration tools, CASE Tools.
