To engage students with the gospels as core sacred texts in the Christian tradition, with a particular focus on teaching, learning and formation in Catholic educational settings.
Students will develop their knowledge and understanding of the contexts, origins, literary forms and theologies of the four canonical gospels, utilising the ‘Three worlds of the text’ scriptural approach. The course also explores the relevance and application of these core Christian texts and their respective communities for contemporary Catholic school settings and especially Religious Education programs. Key areas for consideration include: the Jewish and Graeco-Roman contexts of the gospels, the destruction of the Jewish Temple (70CE), gospel portrayals of ‘the Reign of God’, parables and miracles, infancy narratives in Matthew and Luke, accounts of Jesus’ death and resurrection, the Jewish Wisdom Tradition, gospel Christologies.
