Course aim

Preservice teachers will apply their understanding of principles, skills and strategies to the development of professional approaches to create positive learning environments for secondary school contexts, including students who are living with adversity.

Course content

Preservice teachers will develop critical knowledge of the approaches to classroom and learning management which promote engaging learning environments in the secondary years. A variety of available approaches will be drawn on to promote learner engagement and participation and to promote student wellbeing. Approaches, skills and strategies for handling unproductive student behaviour will be examined. Preservice teachers will develop an understanding of several adversities that impact children’s and young people’s learning, development and behaviour and how to support students with complex needs. Preservice teachers will research effective preventative management strategies and supportive response approaches for secondary school classrooms and articulate the implications for practice.
