Course aim

To consolidate students’ understanding of the social and learning needs of adolescents in order to develop professional approaches that support students’ wellbeing. To identify strategies to support inclusive student participation and engagement and advance the development of inclusive professional approaches to meet the diverse range of learner needs in a secondary school context, including strategies for involving parents/carers in the educative process. To examine the theory and practice of curriculum, pedagogy and assessment across diverse learning settings.

Course content

Students will analyse concepts and theories of inclusion and exceptionality including the complex nature of learner disability and research professional education approaches which promote inclusion, social justice and equity and promote human rights. Legislative requirements and teaching strategies will be researched. Students will further develop their understanding of the nature of adolescence, philosophies and pedagogies for secondary schooling to ensure student wellbeing. They will examine the relationship between equity, social justice and pedagogy and the implications this has for curriculum and assessment practices.
