This course will build upon the learnings in Introduction to Festivals and consolidate student understanding of the power of festivals to motivate social change and tell community-based stories. It will also provide students knowledge on how to effectively manage people and culture in the Festivals space.
With particular emphasis on governance, programming, audience development and retention, this advanced-level course will examine the relationship between festivals and audiences. The global rise of queer film festivals, grass-roots festivals and festivals that promote the diversity of peoples and cultures will all be considered. The power of festivals as a community event will be spotlighted. This course will provide students with a toolkit to effectively manage people and culture in the festivals sector including effective communication, workflows, scheduling and programming, culture, mental health and safe work practices.
