To build students’ understanding of the role of language, multiliteracies and numeracy in personal, academic and workplace contexts.
In the first module, students will develop knowledge of a socio-cultural approach to language and multiliteracies. Students will be introduced to a functional model of language. They will use this model to reflect on their personal literacy practices and to examine the literacy demands of academic and workplace contexts. Students will convey their learning through the analysis of texts and an oral presentation, demonstrating their competency in academic literacy practices.
The second module builds the confidence and competence of undergraduate pre-service teachers in their development as teachers of mathematics. In this course pre-service teachers will unpack and work with the Australian curriculum documents for mathematics, with a focus on the proficiencies (prioritising problem solving) and the general capability of Numeracy. Students' current perceptions of, and attitudes towards, the ideas and use of mathematics will be challenged and extended through explicit connections with everyday mathematics and children’s literature.
