Course aim

To critically examine Islam and Muslim societies in the contemporary world through an investigation of Muslims’ beliefs, rituals, customs and practices; the connections between traditional Islam and the contemporary world, and trends that are affecting the interpretations and practice of Islam today.

Course content

Students will develop an advanced understanding of the most fundamental teachings of Islam including its worldview, creed, ethics, morals, rituals and contemporary debates around issues such as revelation and rationalism, Sunni and Shia politics, Jihad and terrorism, women’s rights, Islamic finance, extremism and fundamentalism. The course develops students’ understanding of the connections between traditional Islamic institutions and concerns, and their modern manifestations and transformations; and new themes and trends that are shaping the modern Muslim experience such as gender, fundamentalism, the media and secularisation.
