Course aim

To provide students with an advanced knowledge of the history of the Islamic civilisation from the time of prophet Muhammad to the fall of the Ottoman Empire. In doing so the course will examine the social, political and religious factors that led to the formation of a formidable Islamic civilisation that continues to influence the modern world.

Course content

Students will gain an advanced understanding of the origins and evolution of great Islamic empires and the various causes for their rise and fall. Students will gain knowledge of the origins of the Islamic civilisation, the people/leaders and circumstances that shaped it, and some of their contributions to the political, religious, economic and social landscape. Students will gain a deeper appreciation of the relationship between the Islamic civilisation and the Western civilisation, and the impacts of this relationship on the making of Europe.
