Advanced Studies in Islam and International Affairs

Course aim

To advance students’ cognitive and communication skills to transmit knowledge, and ideas to others of the genealogy of the evolving role of Islam in contemporary international affairs through the prisms of both Islamic and Western discourses.

Course content

Students will develop an understanding of the classical Islamic paradigms of international affairs, which shaped the relations between an Islamic state and the rest of the world during the time of Prophet Muhammad, during the period of the “Rightly Guided Caliphs” (Khulafa-e-Rashideen), and during Umayyad, Abbasid and Ottoman Caliphates. Students will gain knowledge of the contending Islamic perspectives on the inter-state relations between a Muslim polity and other Muslim and non-Muslim polities and the Western perspectives on the role of Islam in contemporary geopolitics and geo-economics. They will also acquire understanding of relevant colonial and postcolonial contexts. Through this knowledge, students will also have a better understanding of why the notion of a global Muslim community (Ummah) often acts as a unifying force among Muslims - whether living in Muslim or non-Muslim polities - alongside their static/national identities.
