To develop students’ understanding of the most fundamental aspects of the religion of Islam, including its origin, main teachings and practices, and diversity of its representations. To develop students' understanding of some of the most important contemporary issues around Islam and Muslims such as Islam and democracy, women and Islam, Islam and Jihad.
Students will develop an understanding of the origin of Islam, and most fundamental teachings including its creed, ethics, morals and rituals. Students will also develop an appreciation of the difference between Sunni, Shia and other sects within Islam to allow them to understand some of the contemporary debates around these issues. Students will develop an understanding of the debates around Islam and democracy, Jihad and terrorism, women’s rights, Islamic finance, and leadership structures and organisations in the Muslim communities.
