Legal Policy, Lawmaking and Justice

Course aim

This course is aimed at providing students with a strong foundation in the translation of legal policy into law. Students will study the key institutions and processes involved in lawmaking, including concepts of representative democracy and the role of political parties, policy making and public consultation, legislative drafting and parliamentary scrutiny. The course includes a comprehensive overview of the statutory and common law rules of statutory interpretation.

This course provides an overview of a legislative forms and processes, including

• Elections and representative democracy
• Legal policy and legal development
• Key players in legislative law making
• Citizen engagement in policymaking and law making
• Legislative drafting and parliamentary scrutiny
• Statutory interpretation, including common law and statutory rules
