To develop preservice teachers who are knowledgeable about how children learn mathematics and science at the junior primary level of schooling, and to equip them with the professional skills required to plan and assess effectively.
Preservice teachers will examine junior primary school children’s construction of mathematical and science understanding, processes and attitudes and how to implement the inquiry approach to science and mathematics teaching based on the Australian curriculum (Mathematics / Science). They will examine assessment strategies with an emphasis on prior knowledge, formative assessment and timely and constructive feedback. Preservice teachers will plan learning experiences for individuals, small groups and whole classes and evaluate a variety of structured and informal materials, print and digital resources suitable for all children.
