Course aim

To enable students to demonstrate consolidated midwifery knowledge, attitude and skills in a clinical practice environment and to achieve the course objectives in alignment with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Midwife Standards for Practice through midwifery clinical placements.

Course content

Collaboration; teamwork; supporting perinatal mental health and wellbeing, assessment of perinatal mental health and specific mental illness (mood and anxiety); management of mental illness during antenatal, intra partum and postnatal periods; assessment of anxiety and depression using standardised tools including ANRQ and the EPDS; evidence-based, ethical and culturally safe practice; reflective practice and woman-centred care in the presence of psychological issues; women's health, advocacy, equity and rights, compassion, addressing challenges in communication; managing conflict; personal and professional development; e-portfolio; continuity of care; safety and quality; primary health; midwifery practice standards; professional boundaries; workforce preparation.
