Course aim

To enable students to demonstrate appropriate midwifery knowledge, attitude and skills in a clinical practice environment and to achieve the course objectives in alignment with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Midwife Standards for Practice through midwifery clinical placements.

Course content

Labour and birth care, management of maternal epidural, teamwork and collaboration; midwifery assessment of risk; referral, midwifery care in medical and obstetric complications; breastfeeding challenges, evidence-based practice; communication and advocacy for the woman and her family; the impact of technology during complex management of pregnancy and childbirth; cardiotocograph application and interpretation; culturally safe and ethical practice; working with pain; midwifery pharmacology; medication administration (IM injections, IV therapy), collaborative and reflective midwifery practice; interprofessional learning; respectful behaviours; TeamSTEPPS; documentation; child safety; safety and quality; personal and professional development; portfolio; primary health; woman-centred care; continuity of care; midwifery practice standards; professional boundaries.
