Therapeutics, Nutrition and Exercise

Course aim

To build on already acquired knowledge of pharmacology and the relationship between diet, nutrition, exercise and health and the place of nutrition and exercise within therapeutic management and health maintenance of consumers/patients in pharmacy practice settings.

Course content

Nutrient sufficiency and human needs across the lifespan, with a focus on Australian society and nutritionally vulnerable groups. Concepts of energy balance and weight control. Vitamin and minerals and their connection to dietary related diseases. Nutrient/supplement drug interactions. Nutritional issues in chronic diseases (such as obesity, hypertension, hyperlipidaemia and diabetes). Therapeutic diets, enteral and parenteral nutrition. Exercise, its positive impacts on health and practical applications to health maintenance and disease management. Eating disorders (anorexia/ bulimia) and their psychological dimension. Food allergies and food intolerance. Interactions between supplements and medicines. Prophylactic versus reactive treatment of disease with functional foods, nutraceuticals and medicines. Consumer perception and acceptance of functional food and nutraceuticals products, regulatory requirements, toxicological aspects, and their future potential in improvement of health. Devices and digital programs for measuring exercise levels and digital programs for measuring dietary intake.
