Pitjantjatjara Culture and Language

Course aim

To introduce students to Pitjantjatjara culture and language as a basis for communicating effectively with Pitjantjatjara people and analysis of the colonial contact and experience for Pitjantjatjara people.

Course content

Students will develop a comprehensive understanding and knowledge of Pitjantjatjara culture and language through the study of the Pitjantjatjara language, culture and history, the study of Aboriginal languages, concept of Ngapartji and reciprocal exchange, the process of learning Aboriginal languages, the interface with English languages and colonial history, exploration of the Pitjantjatjara language source materials – vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and translation, and interaction with fluent speakers.
