This course provides a foundation training in quantitative skills, which is essential for analysing statistical data and drawing inferences appropriately. Applied understanding of the course contents increases student's mastery of the inferential nature of reasoning, critical thinking and problem solving, which is extremely useful for careers in business, economics, finance, health sciences, information technology, engineering, sociology and other areas of social sciences.
This course introduces students to the basic concepts and application of the following topics: the definition, scope and importance of statistics; graphical descriptive techniques; numerical descriptive techniques; data collection and sampling; normal distribution; introduction to hypothesis testing; chi-squared test; correlation and simple regression analysis.
