Course aim

To develop an understanding of jazz history, styles and arranging.

Course content

Exploring the development of jazz from its beginnings, concentrating on the major musical innovations, definitive stylistic characteristics, external musical influences and seminal jazz artists from the period. The course continues on to introduce the student to the fundamental principles and techniques of arranging and their application within a jazz context. Primary focuses will include: presentation and layout of music, understanding the technical limits and possibilities of the studied instruments, basic arranging techniques and tools of creative expression.
