Course aim

  • Learn mathematical methods associated with transforms in the context of analysing engineering systems
  • Introduce feedback control systems and their applications
  • Develop skills associated with the fundamentals of modelling, analysis, design and simulation of automatic control systems
  • Learn how to design controllers that make systems respond as desired

Course content

Background to control: mathematical modelling; review of transform theory; transfer functions; block diagrams; time-domain responses

Classical control: continuous-time mathematical representation of system dynamics; feedback control; system stability; design of proportional-intergral-derivitive (PID) controllers; frequency domain system responses

Modern control: state-space modelling of systems; controller design in state-space

Digital control: modelling of systems in discrete-time; analysis and design of discrete-time systems; design of digital controllers
