Course aim

To critically examine current issues concerning the nature of numeracy, mathematical understanding, and the development of numeracy in K-12.

Course content

Students will review the literature about the notion of numeracy and engage in debates about different ways this concept has been used in various curriculum statements including the National Mathematics Curriculum (ACARA). Students will analyse mathematical understanding and relate that to numeracy in the context of key strands such as number, geometry and algebra. Students will be critically analysing models of learning activities and draw conclusions about the complexity of mathematical content/skills and their potential to support the growth of numeracy. International tests of students’ mathematical proficiency (e.g. PISA and TIMSS) will be analysed with a view to identifying learning issues for students.
