Course aim

To provide commencing students with the necessary numerical, ethical and academic writing skills and an introduction to appropriate professional behaviours, rights and responsibilities.

Course content

Basic numeracy, arithmetic and algebraic skills underpinning laboratory and dosage calculations, SI units, powers and nomenclature, unit conversion, molarity and concentration units, dilution factors and data representation. Basics of bioethics and research ethics, introduction to indigenous cultural awareness. The role of empirical evidence in making decisions in health practice, understanding, questioning and evaluating evidence. Basics of professional behaviour and codes of conduct (including student codes), rights, responsibilities and consequences. Succinct academic writing.
