To develop a specialist identity as a teacher, and the capacity to theorise about TESOL practice in critical and systematic ways.
Students will have the option to undertake either an action research project or a practical teaching placement. Those undertaking the practicum will develop skills of critical reflection, communication and interpersonal relationships. They will also learn about curriculum and curriculum contexts. Critical evaluation and adaptation of TESOL learning resources and classroom practices is an example of the sort of action research that an educator could undertake. Other possibilities are context analysis, studying the social, cultural and migration influences on teaching, interpretation of TESOL curriculum policy and guidelines or curriculum evaluation.
