Course aim

To provide students with an understanding of issues surrounding economic growth and development, and of business cycles, and to critically analyse the policy actions and responses of governments, central banks and other policymakers.

Course content

This course will be structured around three main topic areas. The first is the economy in the long run and an analysis of the major determinants and consequences of growth and development. This topic uncovers why some countries grow more quickly than others and why some remain poor. The course includes evaluation of which factors, such as capital accumulation, technology and human capital, determine growth in the long run. The second topic will focus on growth in the short run. The causes and consequences of inflation and output growth and the role that policymakers have in reducing inflation and promoting output growth are examined. The final topic will focus on the links between growth and finance. What determines an investment decision and how does it affect growth in the short and long runs.Case studies will be used and applications to understand the mechanism from policy perspectives.
