Money, Banking and Global Financial Markets

Course aim

To edify students through a critical introduction to the important concepts of the economics of money, banking and financial markets – particularly in a global setting. To analyse and evaluate, from an economic point of view, the behaviours of agents in banking and financial markets, and the policy strategies of governments and central banks as they affect global financial markets.

Course content

This course will be structured around four main topic areas with an overview of financial markets and the behaviour of interest rates and exchange rates; an analysis of financial institutions, paying particular attention to regulation and financial crises; the mechanics of central banking and the conduct of
monetary policy and exchange rate regimes; and an examination of monetary theory and open-economy macroeconomic policy.
