Course aim

To introduce materials and workshop processes to design and craft a variety of innovative artefacts and utilitarian objects, including furniture pieces. To give students the understanding, skills and familiarity to safely and responsibly operate a range of tools and machinery within a wood workshop and to ensure these practices meet WHS legislative requirements.

Course content

During this course students will learn to research, design and construct artefacts or a piece of furniture using a variety of materials and associated workshop processes. They will come to understand the specific characteristics, properties and appropriate usage of materials. They will learn to design, plan, measure, cut and assemble components by hand or machine by safely operating a range of hand and power tools. They will gain skills in evaluating the success of their design artefacts by critiquing the methods and processes chosen. Students will employ Safe Operating Procedures to meet WHS requirements.
