Course aim

To introduce materials as a group with physical properties which allow them to be designed and crafted into a variety of innovative artefacts and utilitarian objects, including industrial products. To give students the understanding, skills and familiarity to safely and responsibly operate a range of workshop production equipment and to ensure these practices meet WHS legislative requirements.

Course content

During this course students will learn to research, design and construct basic artefacts in a variety of materials using hand and hand power tools as well as a range of metal working machines such as lathes, drill presses, grinding wheels and bench folders. They will come to understand the specific characteristics, properties and appropriate usage of various types of metals and composite metal materials. They will gain skills in evaluating the success of their artefacts by critiquing the design, materials and processes chosen.
