For preservice teachers to apply knowledge of the relevant middle school technologies in the Australian curriculum when designing, planning and developing Food Technologies teaching and learning programs and resources.
Preservice teachers will develop the necessary skills, knowledge, attitudes, and professional expertise to teach both theory and practical components of Food Technologies programs which meet the learning needs and preferred futures of middle school adolescents. They will consider how the principles of food safety, preservation, preparation, presentation, and sensory perceptions influence the creation of food solutions for healthy eating. Preservice teachers will investigate, design, produce and evaluate solutions for healthy eating for a specific audience and/or designed solution. They will process and prepare high quality food items with consideration of ethical aspects such as food miles and fair trade. They will consider the traditional and contemporary methods of food production used in a variety of cultures, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and the countries of the Asian region with a focus on ethical and sustainable production of food. Preservice teachers will investigate and analyse how they could adapt content and ideas to suit a variety of different student needs in different contexts. They will then design and develop Design and Technology classroom resources and units of work, analysing and evaluating how they meet curriculum requirements, including further changes that can be made, in a cycle of continual improvement.
