To consolidate students’ knowledge of the key screen media research methods that relate to media arts production and the analysis of screen media cultures.
Through a survey of the popular science-fiction genre, students will consolidate their understanding of the different critical approaches that are involved in screen-related research, writing and analysis. Key science-fiction themes such as identity, culture, technology, time and the post-human will be explored through a selection of past and present case-studies. Foundational research methods such as realism, semiotics, narrative and textual analysis, authorship, ideology, gender and spectatorship as well as creative practice forms of research will be employed to engage with the genre and its analysis.
