To enable students to apply their existing linguistic knowledge to analyse complex features of language in different ways and exercise their judgement to choose between competing analyses.
This course has a focus on the grammar of English and some of the other major languages of the world. Students will consolidate and advance their linguistic knowledge of various areas of language structure, in particular the sounds of language, the way in which words are formed, the structure of sentences, and how meaning is represented in language. They will analyse the structures of human languages, and critically evaluate competing analyses of language data.
