To further develop students' understanding of multilingualism as a contemporary and historical phenomenon within global societies.
This course offers intermediate level students a contemporary understanding of how human mobility alters language use, such that individuals and communities become increasingly diverse, bilingual and multilingual. Students will critically examine the theory that contemporary mobility and migration are shifting the global sites of linguistic diversity from east to west and from south to north, resulting in 'super diverse' 21st century societies. Students will investigate current aspects of linguistic diversity in relation to citizenship, education, and resources within society as well as ways in which these may be constrained by socio-economic factors or advanced in educational systems.
