Space, Place and Culture

Course aim

Students will advance their understanding of how space has developed as a site of cultural life. Students will also further develop their knowledge of identities as situated in place and in historical, political, cultural, social and visual contexts.

Course content

Students will critically examine topics such as cultural myths, virtual communities, consumerism, small towns, environment, trauma and the body to understand how spaces and places shape identities and cultural ways of life. Students will draw on historical and contemporary field work to understand the development of the field of cultural geography and to apply its tools of research and analysis.

Prerequisite(s)

Completion of any two second year courses from the Cultural Studies major/sub-major within the MBAA Bachelor of Arts or DBCI Bachelor of Creative Industries, or by approval from the Program Director. Completion of required second year courses in the Humanities and Social Sciences for Education major in LHSE Bachelor of Secondary Education (Honours).
