Course aim

To build on students’ knowledge of contemporary accounts of everyday life through the lens of history and theoretical frameworks. The use of history and theory will situate everyday life as a site for understanding culture. The course will deepen students’ understanding of the relationship between theory and practice by familiarising them with principles of ethnographic research.

Course content

Students will increase their understanding of how history and theory can be used as tools to examine accounts of everyday life in their historical and contemporary contexts. Students will develop case studies of everyday life by drawing on history and theorists such as Bourdieu, de Certeau and Foucault, coupled with some fieldwork experiences. Topics such as suburban houses, gardens, food, lifestyle, technology, music and fashion will be examined to understand how they developed historically, and continue to shape identity, resistance and pleasure in contemporary times.
