Provide future health professionals with core understandings of complexity, multiple interests and agendas that characterise present Australian health services and systems and to provide them with critical thinking skills that enable understanding of these.
Introduce students to key concepts, trends and frameworks that characterise contemporary health responses and understandings; critical thinking strategies to begin understanding the social, political and other influences on health systems; exploration and contextualisation of current Australian patterns of health and system responses through international and historical comparisons; overview of definitions and discourses of health including bio-medical, social, social justice and health promotion understandings; key current mechanisms that shape the contemporary Australian health system including financing, levels of government, and regulatory frameworks; diversity in health professional pathways and careers.
