Course aim

To provide students with advanced knowledge in mathematical modelling of power systems and use of various computational techniques and tools in evaluating steady state and dynamic performances of the systems.

Course content

Power generation using traditional and renewable sources, load variation, load duration curve and generation mix. Description and models of energy market, single- and multi- period auctions, market coupling, available transmission capability, congestion management and ancillary services. Load modelling - static and dynamic. Load flow calculations and analysis of transmission and radial distribution system and probabilistic load flow methods. Fault calculations of general power systems. Generator models, excitation systems and evaluation of small-signal stability and transient stability of general power systems. Direct method of stability assessment. Methods of stability improvement. Voltage stability/collapse and modal analysis voltage stability assessment. Conventional, thyristor-based and converter-based FACTS controller. High voltage dc (HVDC) transmission systems. Challenges and opportunities of smart grid.
