This course aims to develop theoretical understandings and equip students with practical methods needed to teach learners of English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EALD) so they can effectively use English in mainstream subjects to access learning areas across the curriculum
Students will develop a sound understanding of working with children and young learners from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, including Indigenous; making content comprehensible to learners of English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EALD). Sociocultural context of EALD will be introduced through content-based instruction, needs analysis, assessment and reporting in the context of multilingualism. Students will also develop grammar knowledge, both the traditional view and systemic functional grammar approach to improve their subject knowledge in the area of teaching EALD and literacy aligning with the AITSL standards.
