Course aim

To develop skills in the use of computer aided drawing as a tool for visualising and communicating design intent of components and items using SolidWorks. You will learn to create solid models of a design that will be used to create engineering drawings to AS1100 to specify shape, size, tolerances, materials and surface finish; plus create photo-quality images and animations. At the end of the course you will have the skills undertake the SolidWorks recognised Certified SolidWorks Associate (CSWA) test.

Course content

Visualisation of geometric shapes: orthographic projections; isometric views. Techniques for solid modelling. Engineering drawing and dimensioning to AS1100: abbreviations, drawing sheet layout; line types and text size; view placement; reference dimensions; tolerance accumulation; dimensioning rules; section views; and drawing revisions. Detailing welds and surface texture. Limits and fits, and linear and geometric tolerancing. SolidWorks basics (sketch, extrude and cut) and advanced modelling (mirror, pattern, loft, sweep), creating assemblies, drawings, bills of materials, adding motion, photo rendering and animations.
