Operation and Control of Modern Power Systems

Course aim

Demonstrate the operation of deregulated power systems, evaluate the steady state and dynamic performance of power systems with associated controls, and introduce the concepts of FACTS devices.

Course content

Power system deregulation, national electricity market, and Australian energy market operator, market clearing, spot price, market coupling, and ancillary services.

Power system matrices and system reduction.

Load models, power flow calculations, voltage and power flow control, P-V and Q-V curves.

Dynamic model, transient stability, and static voltage stability analysis.

Load frequency control, automatic generation control, automatic voltage regulator,
and stability analysis.

Modelling and characteristics of flexible ac transmission systems (FACTS) devices and their applications to power systems.
