Course aim

Model multivariable systems using state space equations and linearisation techniques
Analyse system controllability and observability
Design observer-based state-feedback controllers using pole placement
Design optimal controllers using linear quadratic regulation and linear quadratic estimation
Design intelligent controllers using fuzzy logic

Course content

Modelling and control of single input, single output (SISO) and multiple input, multiple output (MIMO) systems. Linear algebra for state space methods. Analysis and design of state-feedback controllers and estimators by pole placement and linear quadratic principles for complex real-world processes. Intelligent controllers including expert systems, fuzzy logic and neural networks. Case studies presenting sample controller designs, practical implementation considerations, and limitations of control systems.
