Course aim

To develop students’ critical understanding of the theories and debates surrounding assessment in languages education.

Course content

The political, social, cultural and educational context of assessment; competing paradigms, functions and purposes of language assessment; second language performance assessment; describing language ability; eliciting evidence of language learning; analysing assessment frameworks; teacher judgment; changing conceptualisations of validity and reliability; impact and consequences of language assessment.
