To acquaint students with genre as a critical tool in screen studies by examining the importance of genre in historic and contemporary film production, modes of audience reception and film theory.
The historic development of different film genres (from the Hollywood studio-era through to the present day) alongside the development of genre film criticism. The vital role the genre plays in the production and reception of popular screen texts.
The influence of Hollywood outside the USA and cross-cultural variations in genre (Australia, Japan, Hong Kong); the relationship between genre with stars, directors and audiences. Film genres as complex and dynamic media forms shaped by a variety of historic, industrial and cultural factors, as well as different screen formats.
